Why numerology calculators give different numbers

Two calculators can read the same birth date and show different Life Path numbers. Usually neither is “broken”: they follow different conventions about when to add digits and when to keep 11, 22 or 33. This page shows the method StarYa actually uses, one common alternative, and a date where they differ.

    The method StarYa uses

Every StarYa Life Path result, in every language, comes from the same calculation:

    1. Reduce the birth month on its own by adding its digits.
    2. Reduce the birth day on its own. A day of 11 or 22 is kept as it is.
    3. Reduce the four-digit birth year on its own. A year whose digits add to 11, 22 or 33 is kept.
    4. Add the three results and reduce again, stopping at 11, 22 or 33.

So master numbers are kept twice: inside each part, and at the final step.

A common alternative: add every digit

Some practitioners write the date as one string of digits, add them all at once, then keep reducing until they reach a single digit or 11, 22 or 33.

One Japanese practitioner site documents this convention (linked below). It is one site’s method, not a rule for all Japanese numerology. Other schools differ.

Worked example: same date, two results

The fictional date 11 April 1985:

    StarYa (reduce each part)

    Month
    4
    Day
    11 (kept)
    Year
    1985 → 23 → 5
    Result
    4 + 11 + 5 = 20 → 2

    Alternative (add every digit)

    All digits
    1 + 9 + 8 + 5 + 0 + 4 + 1 + 1
    Result
    29 → 11

StarYa keeps the day as 11, and the parts add to 20, which gives 2. The other method adds every digit to 29, which reduces to 11. Reduce 11 once more and you get 2, so both share the single-digit root 2. They only disagree about whether a master number appears.

From the vowels of the full birth name.
    Watch the labels
Sites use these names differently. The Japanese site linked below calls the vowel number “ソウルナンバー” (Soul number). Always check what a site’s number is calculated from before comparing.

    Why name numbers differ too

    • StarYa reads the full birth name. A nickname or married name gives a different total, so StarYa treats it as a separate label, not as your birth name.
    • StarYa counts the letters A to Z using the Pythagorean chart (A=1 … I=9, J=1 …). Accented letters and other scripts are not converted automatically, so they are not counted.
    • Names in Japanese or other scripts need Romanization first, and different systems (for example Hepburn) can spell the same name differently.
    • Y counts as a vowel only when its part of the name has no A, E, I, O or U, it is not the first letter, and it is not followed by a vowel (so “Lynn” uses Y as a vowel, “Mary” does not).

    What a difference means

Numerology is an interpretive tradition, not scientific prediction. A different number from another site reflects a different convention, not a more “accurate” answer. StarYa never switches methods based on your country or language.
